Better Gas Mileage Car Review: 2009 Chevrolet Aveo
Sunday, October 26, 2008 16:33If you’re considering a hybrid car because you like the idea of increased gas mileage, but are wary of the disadvantages of hybrid cars, the new 2009 Chevy Aveo or Aveo5 might be for you. These new cars from Chevy promise to get around 34 mpg, which is in the same class of the current hybrid vehicles. Unlike hybrids, however, the Chevy Aveos are traditional gasoline powered cars with a modern 16-valve four-cylinder engine and variable valve timing for optimal power and fuel efficiency.
The Aveo is the sedan version and the Aveo5 is the hatchback. Both pump out just over 100 horsepower and lb/ft of torque, so while they’re not ready for the NASCAR circuit they’re not wimply little boxcars, either. They start in the mid $12,000 to $13,000 range, so they’re very affordable as well.
Now, the 34 mpg sounds pretty good, but that’s the best it will get. The actual breakdowns are 27 mpg/City, 34 mpg/Highway for a manual transmission, and 25 mpg/City, 34 mpg/Highway for the automatic (according to Chevy’s specs). This is approaching hybrid fuel effeciency, but not quite there yet. The Toyota Prius gets 48 mpg/City, 45 mpg/Highway (according to federal mileage specs).
But since the Toyota Prius starts at $22,000, almost $10,000 more than the Aveo and Aveo5, you have to consider total cost of ownership. How many times do you have to fill the tank to make back your investment on a hybrid car as opposed to the Chevy Aveo?
It’s not a direct comparison, because the Aveo is a little smaller than the Prius. It’s a nice car to get around in, but noone’s going to mistake you a rock star in it. But if you’re not a rock star, chances are you don’t have rock star money to pay for gas, so it might be worth your while to consider Chevy Aveo‘s increased gas mileage and low sticker price as a great way to save at the pump.

The 34 miles per gallon of the New Chevy Aveo is quite impressive for a regular gasoline powered car. I might consider buying this one for my wife.

The Chevrolet Aveo is your best bet if you want increased fuel economy and improved gas mileage like that of a hybrid car.

This post is just in time, as I am in a discernment stage on what car to buy with my very low budget. I haven’t thought of chevy first as I was searching for toyota or honda, and then I came across your blog. I think I need to see the specification and the car in person. At 34 mpg is an improvement. I will presume that after a restructured GM this will be the norm with all their cars. High efficient cars.

Smaller car, better gas mileage, therefore lower maintenance and repair costs. Downside is you can’t carry too many people tho.

I think that many people are going smaller, its just more economical and in tough times like we going through at the moment, so if one can save money and get more miles and its good for the planet, then all this is a huge bonus.

We run a car rental gig in Auckland and I bet we know the significance of fuel efficiency and economy much better than anyone. We have tried several cars in the past which boasted of low fuel consumption and high performance, but has ended in vain. We are planning to buy some hybrid cars early in 2010 and I think we should give a try to the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo. Hope this car meets all our requirements and prove to be trustworthy. The Chevy Aveo is definitely a better deal. The extra money that you spend to buy a hybrid instead of a regular car, can buy a lot of gas. It also has more room inside than the prius.

I bought one for $4600 out of pocket with a trade in during the “Cash for Clunkers” rebate program. I basically was looking for the most inexpensive car I could buy. It was a stripped down 2009 Aveo5. No AC, no cruise control, but it did have air bags all around, was relatively spacious for such a small car and seemed overall to be practical and efficient. I couldn’t be happier. It has a higher ride hight than any other small car of been in, which I like. I’ve driven it from Portland, OR to Long Beach, CA in a day and it was comfortable and rode well. With a 50/50 split of city/hwy I average 29.5 mpg, which is right between the epa ratings, where it should be. Even if you were to spring for more options, the price is right as compared to a hybrid, and there is no eco-guilt over the battery issue most hybrids have that raise questions about there net green rating (production and recycling of the batteries in hybrids have been an issue). This is a good car for the money. Take advantage of GM incentives and dealer discounts and one can be had at a bargain price, while the lowest cost hybride would probably be double the money.
