The Mercedes Shark II; Would You Donate it to Charity?

Monday, December 1, 2008 22:11

Let’s take a little break from talking about fuel economy – in fact, let’s just forget for a minute that you cared about how many miles per gallon your car got and can afford a $100,000 car – because it seems everyone is talking about the Mercedes Shark II.  It’s an amazing car, born from the union of the Mercedes Benz CLS 55 and the design package by the Mercedes Benz tuning company ASMA Design.

So why is everyone talking about the Mercedes Shark II right now?  Because Kim Kardashian (of Keeping Up With the Kardashians fame) and her boyfriend, Reggie Bush (of the New Orleans Saints, but not as famous), have decided to auction off some of their belongings for charity.  And somehow she talked him into auctioning off his Mercedes Shark II!  It seems they really needed the fame more than the money, however, because they actually submitted a press release to all the major marketing outlets to let everyone know just how “philanthropic” they were being.  I guess he didn’t like it that much anyway – in the past 2 years he only drove it about 7,100 miles.

You can follow the auction for the Shark II on Ebay – it’s up to $80,000 at the time of this writing, and doesn’t end until Dec. 3, 2008.  I tried to find some specs on the car, like how much gas mileage it gets, but it seems when you have that much to spend on a car you’re not so concerned with mpg.  The standard Mercedes CLS four door coupe gets about 12-14 mpg city, and 18-21 highway, and starts at about $65k.  But that’s before ASMA Design got to the car.

ASMA Design took a 2006 Mercedes AMG CLS 55 8-cylinder, chromed it out with a new front grill and chromed alloy rims, and gave it a new Bi-Color finish.  The changes are subtle, but that’s all it takes when you’ve got a brand new Mercedes to work with.  Some more info on the Mercedes Shark 2:

What a great idea even if it is to get attention. They are doing some good even if the the purpose isn’t really meant for that. It is too bad I don’t have a couple million sitting around anywhere cause I could use this car.

@Charity – you don’t need a couple million – the ebay auction for Reggie Bush’s Mercedes Shark II is only at $80,100 and it ends in 9 hours.

While getting some attention and showing the rest of the US that giving to charity is still a necessary good, it does sound pretty desperate that they went ahead and submitted press releases. Hopefully the money raised can go to a good cause tho.

That being said, does anyone else think that the front end (mainly the grill) sort of looks much like a Prowler?

I think Mercedes CLS tuned by ASMA looks very nice. However in Europe it costs much more.

I really do love this design. It looks unique, I’ve never seen such a body kid on a car like this before! And I’ve seen alot of cars, since I am a car lover :)

    Till then,

The design of the the Mercedes Shark II is really aggressive. The name says it all! Kudos to ASMA for designing such a monster.

Although it might have been a publicity stunt, people that donate to charities are great. They make the world better. They become less selfish and others catch on as well.!

That is a great idea. If you have abundance around you why not share it. I have a different view of those two now.

This car has always given me a sort of ‘boulevard cruiser’ vibe, rather then a sports car. Still i like it overall..

Now that is a nice looking car. Wouldn’t mind having one of these in the garage =] Terrible gas mileage though.

Wow, I really hate the media — everytime a person wants to share their blessing to the people, let them be. don’t let them tag as hypocrites or something. What’s wrong donating their money, they just giving a malicious comment to these philanthropies. That car is really worth a fortune, regardless of what people think in the end more people in the charity will benefit because of that act.

I think it looks awesome, i think it is a good thing that they auctioned it off. The general public will be the judge of their “fame” but the chartiy gets real cash from this auction, you can’t argue with that.

What a nice looking car! When these first came out the auto world was blown away by the styling and engineering.
